Will it all come out? Report on the 2022 Hungarian parliamentary elections declassified

• The report on party funding for the 2022 elections was originally classified until 2052, but now an official document has been published on the Hungarian Parliament’s website. Other documents are also planned to be declassified in the near future.

The background

The parliamentary elections were held in Hungary on 3 April, 2022. Fidesz and its candidate Prime Minister Viktor Orbán won the elections by a massive majority, as they had done so for many years now. Despite this, there were strong attacks against opposition Prime Minister candidate Péter Márki-Zay and his Everybody’s Hungary Movement (Mindenki Magyarországa Mozgalom – MMM) due to financial support from abroad which is prohibited. Some politicians even claimed that the situation posed a national security risk. Meanwhile, as hvg.hu writes, Márki-Zay had also advocated the declassification of secret service reports investigating foreign donations, saying they have nothing to hide.

Everything will be revealed

It seems that now everything is coming to light, after Fidesz politician Máté Kocsis requested the declassification of the report on election party funding, Blikk wrote last week. Concerning the discussions at the meeting of the National Security Committee, among other things, the politician wrote on his Facebook page:

[…] As the report that was disclosed today was legally classified until 31 December, 2052, I am unable to provide details. I have, therefore, initiated the declassification of the report. I hope that the report will soon be available to everyone, as it concerns an unprecedented action that gravely undermines the country’s sovereignty, and every Hungarian has the right to know about it.

Information published so far

Blikk has spotted a published document titled “An overview of the unified opposition’s foreign campaign funding” on the Hungarian parliament’s website. The document is available HERE.

Based on the information revealed on the website, investigations have found that the US non-governmental organisation, Action for Democracy (AD), transferred significant amounts of money to Everybody’s Hungary Movement (MMM) led by Péter Márki-Zay. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is investigating budgetary fraud, while Hungarian National Bureau of Investigation is investigating money laundering and embezzlement. The primary investigative data confirms that AD transferred a total of HUF 1,848,603,106 (EUR 4,667,460) to the MMM’s account on 8 occasions. The MMM paid out HUF 1,4 billion (EUR 3,5 million) to Dat-Adat Professional Kft. AD also transferred significant amounts to three other Hungarian legal entities: to Oraculum 2020 Ltd. HUF 1 billion (EUR 2,5 million), to Dat-Adat Professional Ltd. HUF 148 million (approx. EUR 374,000), and to Gemius Hungary Ltd. (dealing with data processing and research) HUF 3,5 million (approx. EUR 8,840).

It is currently under investigations as to how the Hungarian non-governmental organisations and companies concerned used the funds received from abroad. As promised, information on the case will be regularly reported to the National Security Committee in the future.
